My Gear

5d.jpg

(This is the bottom of my battered 5D – 30 countries and 75,000 pictures and still working great!)

So I have had numerous emails about the gear I use, so I decided to put up a page with everything I normally carry with me in my current kit. This is constantly evolving as I tighten my style and find what works best for me. From my experiences on the road for the last three years here is what I am now carrying:

-Canon 5D Full Frame digital SLR (x2)

-Canon 7D digital SLR

-Canon 24mm F/1.4

-Canon 35mm F/1.4 (If I had to live with only one lens, this would be it)

-Canon 135mm F/2

-Canon 580EX II Speedlite

Pocket Wizard Mini TT1 and Flex TT5 radio slaves

-Canon Timer Remote Cable Release

-Apple MacBook Pro

-Apple Aperture 3 RAW editing software

That’s what I use, but the gear doesn’t make the photographer.

If you are just starting out (or dont feel like destroying your back with all that weight) and looking for a good camera that will grow with you as you learn, check out the Canon Rebel T1i or the Nikon D5000. I use Canon myself, and you will find people who will spend days on internet forms arguing about which is better. The truth is they both take amazing images, and when you hang you pictures on your wall, no one will know what brand of camera took it.

I would also suggest a fast prime lens to go with your starting zoom, there are great versions of a 50mm f/1.8 for both Canon and Nikon.  Get one, set it to aperture priority at F/2, set the ISO at 800, and head out anywhere for some great pictures without the flash (you’ll need to focus carefully though!).

I purchase 99% at BH Photo Video because they usually have the best prices and they have never let me down.
