Meghan + Josh : San Diego Engagement Session

January 24th, 2012:

San, Diego, Engagement, Session, Seaport, Village, Photography, Photographer, Travel, Los, Angeles, Wedding, Destination,

Not too long ago, I was just explaining to someone why the movie industry moved to Hollywood: because, unlike New York, Southern California has awesome weather where you could make movies all year round (sunlight = film exposure). The same wonderful climate here also means that Felicia and I rarely have to worry about rescheduling shoots due to the weather. Well,  it happened that it was raining when we first met Meghan & Josh for their consultation, and it rained all the way as we drove to San Diego for their engagement session too.

Thankfully we left Burbank real early in case of traffic, and by the time Felicia and I finished our delicious pork cheek ramen, the angry skies had cleared up, and Meghan & Josh soon arrived chirpy & excited for their shoot. Kudos to Meghan for being such a trooper because it was really chilly out. So chilly that Felicia was very sad she did not bring her expedition grade North Face parka along for the shoot. Don’t judge her: she moved from the tropics.

We started at Seaport Village in San Diego before walking to the USS Midway and took our turn among the unceasing line of tourists at the well-known statue of  a sailor kissing a nurse (apparently its proper name is “Unconditional Surrender”, and the nurse depicted attended its unveiling). Very apt for these two, seeing as Josh was leaving for another military assignment just a couple of days after this shoot.

Thanks guys for being so awesome to work with. Looking forward to your wedding in July!

Lens Review: Canon 85mm F/1.2L II

January 17th, 2012:

Canon, 85mm, f/1.2, II, lens, review, photography, lenses, wedding, engagement, photographer, los angeles, destination, gear

Remember how I joined Canon Professional Services as a Platinum Member, where I can get free “Evaluation Equipment“? Well, I am loving trying out new gear and the second lens I requested (after the 100mm macro) was the Canon 85mm F/1.2 II (the “II” means it is the second version of this lens). As I said before,  I know many of you out there won’t care about these gear review posts, but a few of you will, so I’ll keep on reviewing as the lenses come.

Canon, 85mm, f/1.2, II, lens, review, photography, lenses, wedding, engagement, photographer, los angeles, destination, gear

f/1.6     ISO 50   1/1000 sec

Right now Felicia and I shoot with 4 lenses (the 24mm f/1.4, 35mm f/1.4, 50mm f/1.2 and the 135mm f/2) and while I am completely happy with our current setup, we are always hearing about the 85mm f/1.2,  and how some photographers swear by this lens while others just swear at it.  The complaints are about slow focus, the giant weight (almost 2 1/2 lbs) and the excessive cost (around $2K); while the photographers who love it say it all doesn’t matter once you open the aperture wide and see the dreaminess of its backgrounds. The real question for me is if this uber-expensive lens is worth the 5x premium over the 85mm f/1.8 (which supposedly focuses faster & just as sharp, and costs only $360), also I am interested in knowing if I actually will enjoy shooting at this focal length and we will get something our other lenses don’t already provide.

Canon, 85mm, f/1.2, II, lens, review, photography, lenses, wedding, engagement, photographer, los angeles, destination, gear
                             f/1.2    ISO 125   1/400 sec                                                                                                                       f/1.6    ISO 125   1/125 sec

The first day I had this lens, Felicia and I were up in Santa Barbara wandering the streets and took a few portraits of each other.  I popped off a few of her at f/1.2 and saw that famed background blur and razor thin focus.  She snapped one of me looking goofy at f/1.6 and instantly exclaimed that she loved this lens. (Anyone wants to give her a late Christmas/early birthday gift? Just sayin’….)

Canon, 85mm, f/1.2, II, lens, review, photography, lenses, wedding, engagement, photographer, los angeles, destination, gear
f/2.2     ISO 160  1/400 sec

Genna & Michael had the luxury of enjoying this lens through their wedding images, and I used it during the ceremony in addition to my 35mm f/1.4 (I always have 2 cameras on me), and found this to be a spectacular focal length for a ceremony such as this one where there are very little restrictions on where I can be. and don’t need the extra reach of the 135mm f/2.  As you can see from the image above, everything goes “magical” really quickly with this beast.

Canon, 85mm, f/1.2, II, lens, review, photography, lenses, wedding, engagement, photographer, los angeles, destination, gear
f/1.6     ISO 640   1/125 sec

Genna & Michael’s ceremony was late in the afternoon in November and by the time we were doing their portraits the sun had already dropped behind the surrounding hills, I was able to open up the aperture quite wide and still capture amazing images on this lens in very little light (which I could also do with my 50mm f/1.2).

Canon, 85mm, f/1.2, II, lens, review, photography, lenses, wedding, engagement, photographer, los angeles, destination, gear
f/10   ISO 320   1/160 sec

All in all, I had no complaints about the focusing speed and although 85mm f/1.2 is quite heavy, Felicia and I didn’t find it unmanageable to carry throughout a wedding day.  This will most likely be added to our camera bag one day, but I still think I’ll probably buy the 100mm macro first.  I also want to check out Canon’s other 85mm before I commit to the $2K purchase of this lens. Although, I don’t deny, when this lens came in the mail and we begin using it, it certainly looks REAL nice next to its L-Series siblings in my bag (Yes, I am a shameless gear whore).

Our next review? The Canon 14mm f/2.8 ultra wide!

Thanks for reading, and if you’re looking to buy this lens, check out B&H, they normally have the best prices and always have the best service.

Anna + James: Santa Monica Engagement

January 13th, 2012:

Santa, Monica, Engagement, Session,, Photography, Photographer, Los, Angeles, CAlifornia, Wedding, Travel

Anna and James booked us a few months back to capture their wedding next summer and after a busy holiday season we were happy to meet up with them again for our first engagement shoot of the year.  James grew up in Santa Monica so our first location was Douglas Park, a sentimental spot where he played as a child.  After a little while there we headed down to Ocean Blvd. and Third Street Promenade to capture the late afternoon colors (speaking of colors, I am absolutely addicted to creating vibrant images – if you hadn’t noticed).  Anna and James are stunning people who were totally game for whatever Felicia and I suggested making this an awesome Sunday afternoon for us.

Congrats again guys on finding each other, and we can’t wait for your fast approaching big day!

Speaking of colors, I get comments about the vibrancy of my images from time to time, and questions about how I photoshop them.  The answer is, I don’t photoshop images like this at all. It is a mixture of on camera filters, in camera white balance, and gels attached to my flashes.  Almost anyone could make images with these colors with a couple dollars worth of gel and a point and shoot camera with white balance control.  (magenta filter over the lens, green gel over the flash, camera set to daylight WB)

Photo Session with Lissette, Jason + Mason

January 11th, 2012:

Maternity, Session, Photography, Photographer, Wedding, Travel, Los, Angeles, Chatsworth

Several weeks after we did the maternity shoot for expectant parents Jessica & Nathan, we got a call from Jessica’s sister Lissette. Both sisters are pregnant, and are due only a month apart!

We met the excited trio at their home where I popped off a few shots in front of an open window, then we trooped out into nature on this cold & blustery winter’s day. Felicia has been particularly enamored with Mason since she met him as the charming ring-bearer at Hellen & Jose’s wedding, and she was thrilled to be tasked with keeping him entertained while I photographed his parents. That’s right Felicia, keep borrowing other people’s children, so we’ll never need to have our own!

Whitson + Juna – Los Angeles Twilight

January 9th, 2012:

Los, Angeles, Twilight, Engagement, Session,, Wedding, Photography, Photographer, Photographers, Travel, Destination, Pocket, Wizard, TT5, Bunker, Hill

On Christmas Eve, I was in my Dad’s backyard, drowsy from a food coma and was being coerced into playing yet another game of croquet, when my phone rang. It was Michelle, whose engagement pictures we shot in the Nevadan desert and the glitz of The Strip in Vegas. Her best friend, Juna, was visiting LA from Jakarta Indonesia with her fiancé Whitson, and they were hoping we could squeeze them into our schedule before they flew home in a few days.

Thankfully, besides an obscene amount of feasting with the family on the calendar, I had no other shoots scheduled.

We met with Juna & Whitson for a shoot to capture the sights of downtown Los Angeles, and I was very impressed by their outfit changes: Juna had three awesome gowns for maximum dramatic effect, and Whitson was not to be outdone, picking up several Hugo Boss suits and new shoes while shopping the day before to keep up with his lady. Michelle tagged along as driver & chaperon and updated Juna’s hair & make-up for each outfit change. Thanks Michelle!

Shooting for Fun

January 4th, 2012:

Manhattan, Beach, California, Pier, Travel, Photography, Photographer, Los, Angeles

Last week I got a Facebook message from Randy (who I hiked the Lost Coast with in 2009) and he was coming into town and wanted to spend an afternoon taking some photos, hanging out and grabbing a beer.  I was quick to accept and we met up down by Manhattan Beach pier and watch the sun drop in the sky.  It’s a rare opportunity to get out and shoot for fun, without any deliverables, just me and a camera and plenty of time.  I think this first picture in the post is my favorite, a 30 second exposure with me standing extra still as the tide comes in and out at my feet – totally cool.

I love watching the light change from the yellow of the sun on the horizon, to the milky pink of dusk and the purples of twilight just before the skies go black.  The whole process takes about an hour and a half, but who can complain when you are sitting on a beach with your wife and good friends watching the sun drop.

After the sky went completely black, we found a mexican joint, drank those beers and ate way too much.

Good times.

2011: That Went Fast…

January 2nd, 2012:

Holy Crap. Where the hell did that year go?!?!

Felicia and I have been non-stop shooting, editing, and traveling for the last eight months, and then, all the sudden I am sitting having a beer on New Years Eve (4 minutes until midnight) and I realized 2011 was over.  I looked at my wife and said, “This one was one of my best years yet, but lets make 2012 even better.”  She smiled, gave me a midnight kiss and repeated a line from our wedding vows about making my dreams as important as her own.  Who could ask for more.

Now it’s Monday afternoon on the second day of the year and we are caught up with all our work. There’s no editing to do and we have no shoots for the next 46 hours, so I thought I’d take a moment to recap our year with some of my favorite photographs that we create.  I say “we” because although our company has my name on it, these photographs are a mixture of both Felicia and I pushing the shutter, and a combined sense of aesthetic and style that Felicia and I have been growing into together.  Sometimes I’ll be fixated on a shot, but know something could be slightly better and Felicia will nudge me a foot to the right and the image will become magical.  Danny (of Erin + Danny) said it best: “I don’t know how anyone could do your job alone.”

I don’t know either, Danny.  Felicia and I continually challenge each other to be better, creating more than the sum of our parts.

We started off the year with a drive up the coast to photograph Adela and Brett in Santa Barbara.

Jenn and Dave had a winter wedding in January at 7 Degrees, complete with a sparkler send off.

Jo and Red stood REALLY still during twilight in L.A. for me to catch moving traffic.

We headed out to Death Valley for some winter camping and an engagement session for one of my best friends and his lady.

We met Natalie and Justin for the first time in February, shot their wedding in the summer and now they are quickly becoming our personal friends.

Iris and Mike took us with them for a wonderful day at Disneyland, where Felicia was even awarded “Guest of the Day”

Dom and Lisette opted for a two day engagement session, part one with them looking uber-classy and running around downtown and part two heading off into the woods.

Parker and Denna snuck on the roof of the Standard Hotel and played it chill for the better part of 45 minutes until we got asked to leave by security. Lame.

Aniad and Justin had a beautifully rustic backyard wedding on the Ranch where Justin grew up.

Michelle and Endy talked us into heading out to the desert for a two day shoot covering Vegas and a Nevadan ghost town quite literally in the middle of nowhere.

With last minute rescheduling, Christine and Scott ended up having a perfect engagement session at Olvera Street and Union Station.  It may have rained a little bit, but who cares.

Clark Otis celebrated his first birthday with a photo session with his two adorable parents.

We took a day off to take Madalyn out on the open seas for what she declared was “The best day of my life!”

Felicia and I managed to sneak in a 3 week trip to Singapore to visit the family, and I was able to take 5 day to head to Borneo to photograph Orangutans and fly off a fast moving moped.

Upon getting home from South East Asia, we dropped full speed into wedding season. Jo and Red kicked off the start of our busy times, and were followed with a wedding almost every weekend.

We found the kindness of strangers makes for some of the best photo locations, shooting in various backyards around Pasadena and Los Angeles.

John and Andrea won us over with their easy charm, perfect So. Cal sunset and margaritas.

A Beverly Hills wedding in the park? Uncommon, but spectacularly pulled off by Christine and Scott.  This one even got us featured on I Do Venues.

Daniel, one of my two best men in my wedding, tied the knot with Scherrie I and couldn’t be more happy for the two of them.  We just spent New Year’s Eve with these two, and my only complaint is they now live so far away we don’t get to see them often enough.

We headed to Washington D.C. to photograph Beverly and Silviano’s wedding, Angela and Jeff’s e-shoot,  followed by a short touristing trip up to NYC.

Felicia, who spends way too much time online, got to meet Creature-Gorgous and Mr. Delicious and do a mini photo session for the family in a colorful D.C. alley.

Danny + Erin squeezed their photoshoot in, between jetting in and out of Los Angeles, and Felicia was instantly smitten with Erin. They still hold the record for longest client meeting ever (although after 45 minutes business was done and we spent the next 2 hours chatting and being friends).

Iris and Mike got married on the hottest day of the year, and even though I might have been pouring sweat and looking disheveled, they both pulled off looking suave without any effort.

“Think… Hot Mess!” was my direction to Amber for the picture below, she gave me this one piercing gaze before she burst into laughter.

Jon + Maria told me dirty jokes for inspiration while we used Pasadena as an epic background for their engagement shoot.

We photographed Shaby & Mike’s fruitylicious wedding in Simi Valley, and Shaby even surprised us with an equally delicious Thank You gift afterwards.

So bubbly and energetic, Felicia and I were running to keep up with Alisa and Jon at there engagement shoot at Crystal Cove. I believe at one point this ex-gymnast was cartwheeling down the walkway.

Michael and Genna have been to the O.C. fair together every year for the past decade, so it was completely natural for us to tag along and shoot their engagement session there!

Waaaaaayyyyy back in the day I was a bartender, and from time to time Pete would come in and have a drink.  We lost touch, I went off to travel, found my wife, and somewhere along the lines he found Cindy.  Through a series of mutual friends he found me once more and we headed out to Ojai, avoiding rattlesnakes and capturing the fading pink skies.

Swords in San Diego? Definitely makes for a wonderful wedding day.

A Super Hero themed wedding? “Yes Please!”

In between all the busy-ness, we tried to find time for family, young and old.

Although Amber, Felicia and I made fun of Sean, we know he’s not really a vampire from Twilight. (Maybe).

Totes Adorbs.” Enough said about John and Andrea.

Heather and Ian might be extremely beautiful people, but they’re still down-to-earth and just a little bit goofy.

Pete and Cindy in my favorite vineyard photo I have ever taken.

Super smiles during this mini session of Danielle and M. while we visited Napa.

A rare Sunday off means indulging my wife’s penchant for “treasures”.

Shawna & Matt wed in Dana Point and even ordered a 5-foot panoramic print of their wedding scenery.

Natalie and Justin were married in September in Altadena. After the bachelor party the night before the wedding, Justin may actually be sleeping in the picture below.

One of my favorite pictures of the year.  The tattoo and ring say it all for Amber and Sean.

A random late night photoshoot for Mr O in our living room. It means so much to Felicia and I when friends brave the trans-Pacific flight just to visit us. Thank you.

A small Norwegian child holding a pumpkin.  Horrible caption, awesome kid.

Chrissy and John caught the last few glimpses of light at El Matador State Beach.  We can’t wait for their Kyoto Grand wedding next summer!

I learned about Macro fun and I also learned I will be spending $1K to add this lens to our kit very soon.

Eileen and Trinidad are close friends with Cassandra and Javier, so I expect they will be bringing the party and getting grandmas to do tequila shots at their wedding next summer as well (just like Cass and Javier did!)

Erin and Danny brought classic charm to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and gave us extra long to shoot wedding pictures all across Los Angeles. Epic epicness. Thank you, guys!

Michael and Genna were out last wedding of 2011 and we couldn’t have asked for more. Beautiful weather, beautiful people and the photography gods agreeing with me. Totally win.

Justin and Christa brought their Hollywood style glamour to Venice and Franklin Canyon. Another wedding we can’t wait to shoot next year.

We shot a winter’s day Maternity session for Jessica and Nathan, catching that early evening light and the glow of an expectant mother. Stunning.

More babies? Felicia and I photographed the birth of Lily Grant. A emotional and unforgettable experience.

And finally for my muse, Felicia, who is ever encouraging and ever challenging me…. We hit the two year mark without missing a beat, had some photos done, and both learned and grew so much – personally and professionally.  This year was exponentially better than the last and if it keeps getting better I can’t wait for our lives together to keep moving forward.

I love you.

5th Annual Holiday Mischief Making

December 19th, 2011:

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without making sure we got put on the naughty list (or at least the moderate-troublemaking list), so for our 5th year straight we rallied the Santa’s and headed off to Pasadena for another evening of Holiday celebrations.  As we’ve done for the past half decade, we drank slightly too much, waved and said “Ho Ho Ho!” to all the Santa lovers, and just generally enjoyed ourselves.

The best part of the whole day was earlier when Felicia was speaking to her mom on the phone explaining the crawl and her mom was taken aback at the entire event.  Felicia said “Oh, well.. Rob’s dad is going too”,  which completely eased her mothers concern about the event and made her believe that all would be well.  Yet, truth be told, my Dad got the craziest out of all of us, turning everyone he met into his new best friend.  A few times throughout the night I had to go hunt him down and drag him along with us – although the giant Santa smile on his face made it all worth it.

At one point we walked by a resturaunt and the owner rushed out and told us he’d give us $100 cash and some free drinks if we came in and said “Hi.” for a few minutes.  Who are we to refuse? We shuffled around his tiny place, got pictures with all the guests and scored ourselves a quick bill.

Good times were had by all, which was the perfect start to the upcoming week of holiday gatherings.  Now, if only this headache I still have would clear up…

We first met Jessica when she was just a few months pregnant at her sister Hellen’s wedding in the summer. Fast forward a few months, and she was ready for her maternity pictures. Well, maternity and paternity pictures. Hey, Dads contribute to the baby-making process too, so we made sure both parents are captured in their state of pre-baby bliss.

Jessica and Nathan were total troopers despite the very chilly day in Placerita Canyon Park, picture-perfect and working it for the camera.

Congrats Jessica & Nathan! We look forward to meeting your little boy in February!

Justin + Christa: Franklin Canyon & Venice

December 9th, 2011:

Justin and Christa are freaking cool. No two ways about it, they may not be LA natives, but they have certainly taken wholeheartedly to the lifestyle.   Justin is a young filmmaker and within minutes of meeting, he and I digressed into talk about cameras, lenses and all the other image-creating paraphernalia whilst we were supposed to be talking about their wedding day.  Our ladies just rolled their eyes and knowingly put up with our likeminded obsessions.   Eventually we did get to talking about their upcoming wedding day and shortly after, we planned their engagement session for an afternoon in Franklin Canyon Park followed by a sunset stroll around Venice Beach.  Felicia and I had a great time getting to know these two and are already looking forward to their Mountain Mermaid wedding in May.
