Welcome Lily!

Rob
Some of you may recall that a few months ago, Felicia and I had our 2nd anniversary photo session with Ian Grant, a friend and fellow photographer. Well, Ian and his wife Tanya were expecting a little one, and last month when Tanya was 8 months pregnant and unable to fill her normal role as Ian’s 2nd photographer at a wedding, he asked me to come along and shoot with him.  Throughout the day we talked all sorts of geeky-photo-nerd talk, but also ended up discussing his impending fatherhood and his daughter’s birth.  The subject of Birth Photography came up and we both touched on how awesome it could be for a new family and the newborn to have pictures of the day they entered the world.  Neither of us committed to anything at that moment (We both are fairly smart married men – we have been successfully conditioned, sometimes through trial & error, to know that such a personal event would have to be discussed with our significant others prior to making any commitments).

About a week later, having consulted with our respective wives, we decided to give it a go.  The next day we all headed out for Mexican food in Santa Monica and were briefed on details of “The Great Baby Escape”. We were now in on the plan!

Now, babies are horribly unpredictable creatures, which meant that, the moment Felicia and I agreed to this endeavor, we had to constantly be ready for The Call.  We had just shot our last wedding of the year a few days before and now had a couple of weeks without anything major scheduled (other than massive amounts of editing, meetings and such).   I kept the cameras charged, and every time we left the house – even for something as mundane as trip to the grocery store – we had the camera bag ready in our car, and every time we went to sleep we knew the call could come in at any time.

Saturday, November 19: It was Ian’s 30th birthday and we were somewhere on the 710 when my phone rang.  He said, trying to sound as casual as possible, “Hey.. I’m not sure, but the wheels of labor may have been set in motion.” He agreed to give us an update after consulting with their doctor, so Felicia hurried along to Seal Beach and dropped off some desserts for what would have been an early Thanksgiving with my 93-year-old Grandfather. Sure enough, the phone rang again. This time, Ian couldn’t mask the anxiety/excitement in his voice. It was REALLY happening! We told him we’d see him at Ceders Sinai Medical Center, said goodbye to a very confused Grandpa, turned the car around and headed to Beverly Hills.

When we finally met up with Ian in the waiting room it was just after 6pm. His goal was for Lily to make her appearance before midnight so they could share a birthday. But the Doctor came in and said it wasn’t to be, as it would probably be a little later than midnight before Lily would make her grand entrance. Slightly crestfallen, we let Tanya sleep while the 3 of us headed to the cafeteria, then waited some more before we three took a walk around the neighborhood at midnight to stretch our legs. It was during this walk that I noticed a bar across the street and suggested going for beers while we wait, but my great idea was immediately vetoed in the form of The Killer Glare from my wife. Spoilsport.

Evening passed into night, and night passed into late night, then late late night… and finally, as Felicia and I almost killed our iPhones playing ‘Words with Friends’, Ian came bouncing into the waiting area and asked “Are you ready for a baby?!?”

We jumped up and joined Tanya in the delivery room, our fingers on the shutter,  ready for Lily’s first ever close-up.

Felicia

Being born: It is a process that every single one of us, regardless of race, language, creed, or social standing, experience ourselves. It is such a momentous occasion for the Individual: arriving as the newest member of planet Earth, our whole lives ahead of us, full of promise, full of adventure. But shockingly we don’t remember anything about being born. I figured then, having a pictorial documentary might be of value to this child who one day would be a woman, and possibly experience the process of birth on the other side: as a Mother.

Rob and I are at weddings almost every week, sharing in one of the most significant days of someone’s life. A day often filled with emotion, history, and glimpses of the future. But even the most emotional of weddings would not compare to the raw, visceral, unscripted reactions of the birthing experience. Literal tears of joy that express a profound gamut of emotions, all at once complex yet simple. The simple joy of new parents, where all those months of anticipation culminate in that single moment when A Child Is Born.

Thank you, Ian & Tanya, for giving us the honor to be part of this beautiful, intimate experience. Congratulations on the arrival of Lily Madeline Grant.

Coto de Caza Wedding – Michael + Genna

November 28th, 2011:

Remember that wickedly-sweet session we did at the O.C. Fair last summer with Genna + Michael?

I sure do, and after that awesome evening with this couple I was amped to be shooting their wedding at Coto de Caza Golf Club in Orange County.  I knew these two were ready to have a good time on their big day and Felicia and I were there to capture the whole thing.

Michael had a gift dropped off for his “Almost Wife” while she was getting ready. Genna opened it, thrilled to find a wedding day Lladro figurine, which their families collect. On the first day of their married life together, Genna would also begin her own collection.

It had rained the day before, it was forecasted to rain the day after, and it had a 30% chance of raining during the ceremony, but thankfully the mildly overcast skies only created a wonderful soft light for Felicia and I, without a hint of rain.

Felicia grabbed this picture of Grandma from during the ceremony and it is easily one of my favorite candids from the entire day.

Lens Review: Canon 100mm F/2.8L Macro IS

November 22nd, 2011:

Canon, 100mm, f/2.8, L, Macro, IS, Lens, review, wedding, rings, close, up, jewelry, photography, about

So remember a couple months back when the shutter on one of my cameras went out during a shoot?  Well, after that I started researching how much it would cost to fix and I realized I qualified to join Canon Professional Services as a Platinum Member, which would offer me 60% off Canon repairs, free loan equipment while gear is being fixed and free Fedex for repairs, and half a dozen free camera cleanings (worth $30 each).  The $500 membership fee seemed pretty steep at first, but I instantly saved about $380 on the replacement shutter to my broken camera and having my 35mm f/1.4 completely overhauled back to factory condition.  Then a week after I signed up, I received a welcome kit in the mail which included 2 “Pro Straps” (which were branded CPS in big letters all over and go against my love of simple black straps), a CPS embroidered Thinktank laptop bag, a hardcover book about Canon lenses, and a few sets of Body/Lens Caps.  All this stuff had a 99% chance of never being used and quickly went up on Ebay to sell for $187. So between the repair cost savings and selling the welcome kit I was able to cover the cost of my CPS membership.

Now that I have deferred the costs, I was able to get to the one benefit that I was most excited about: with my Platinum Membership, I can get free “Evaluation Equipment”.  Meaning, Canon will ship me ANY of their lenses to test for a period of two weeks and all I have to do is pay return shipping.  This is a killer deal seeing how lens rental costs between $20-$200 A DAY if I want to rent it from a local rental house.  So in honor of being able to try all the Canon equipment I have lusted over for the last decade I decided to do blog post reviews and them as I try the new lenses.  I know many of you out there won’t care about these posts, but a few of you will, so here goes.

Canon, 100mm, f/2.8, L, Macro, IS, Lens, review, wedding, rings, close, up, jewelry, photography, about

f/14     ISO 400   1/1000 sec

The first lens I requested (the day after I signed up for CPS) was the Canon 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS (Macro means it can take pictures or really small things and ‘IS’ means it has Image Stabilization).   Felicia and I have been talking about adding this lens to our kit for a while, and since we had two weddings and an engagement shoot coming up, this was the perfect time to try it out.  This lens would have one main purpose for us – to take pictures of wedding rings super close up.  Sure, it can be used as a regular 100mm lens too, and might see a little use that way, but the only reason I would be spending the $1000 is to get great ring shots, so that’s how I tested it.  If you are interested in MTF charts, pixel peeping, light falloff, and scientific analysis of this lens, there are plenty of other sites for you to check out. This is more about actual usability to a working wedding photographer.

The first thing I found when shooting test shots at home was that a f/2.8 the depth of field was so insanely thin that almost nothing was in focus – I could capture a single diamond or just the edge of a wedding band and everything else fell off into a beautiful blur (image below).  It was f/5.6 before enough of the rings were in focus to make me happy, which essentially limited our indoor shooting of rings without a tripod, flash, or super high ISO. I’m not saying that this lens doesn’t work at f/2.8 (just not for me) and I am only remarking that in a fast paced wedding day, setting up a tripod to get a ring shot is not an option, so I am limited to shooting rings outdoors at f/5.6 or greater or using flashes indoors to get the shots I want (like I said, perhaps the f/2.8 look would work for other photographers, or even for me in some other context).

This didn’t deter me from this lens though. We are usually next to a window or can take the rings outside if necessary, but it did get me thinking about lighting for such small objects.  I started toying with 2 flashes attached to 2 Pocket Wizards Flex TT5s, bare bulb just out of frame of the rings at a ultra low power setting (1/64). Having the flashes so close to the subject let me create a fairly soft light from two directions.  I quickly fell in love with this setup because I was able to create studio looking images quite quickly and it let me stay in the f/11 – f/22 range that I found still let the far side of the image fall gently out of focus. It also worked perfectly on a wedding day because I could just whip the flashes out of my bag, already attached to the Pocket Wizards and have this “studio” set up in 20 seconds.   I quickly realized that this is how I would be using a macro most of the time.

f/2.8    ISO 800   1/50 sec

Depth of field is beautifully thin, but a tad too thin for me at f/2.8

f/5.6     ISO 400   1/60 sec

F/5.6 outdoors can capture rings sharply and still have them pop from their surroundings.  At the same f-stop indoors I could probably have made this shot work if I was next to a window, propped myself against something and cranked up the ISO a little, but the success % of crisp shots would have been lower.

Canon, 100mm, f/2.8, L, Macro, IS, Lens, review, wedding, rings, close, up, jewelry, photography, aboutf/32     ISO 200   1/250 sec

f/32 puts everything in focus. It was just a little too crisp for my liking.  Although the sushi does make me hungry.

Canon, 100mm, f/2.8, L, Macro, IS, Lens, review, wedding, rings, close, up, jewelry, photography, aboutf/4.5   ISO 1250   1/125 sec

If I backed up a little bit and shot items that were bigger than rings (like the cork/bowtie combo), the wider f-stops worked remarkably well and fit in easily with the rest of my wedding work, but I wonder if I could have captured this as crisply without the image stabilization.

Canon, 100mm, f/2.8, L, Macro, IS, Lens, review, wedding, rings, close, up, jewelry, photography, aboutf/20     ISO 160   1/200 sec

All in all, this is exactly what I dreamed a macro should be, and Canon did right to let me try it because now Felicia and I want it. Although, since I fell in love with using my flashes on the rings it left me wondering if the image stabilization was really necessary, because if I can control the amount of light, I can always shoot around 1/200th.  Canon also offers a 100mm f/2.8 Macro without the stabilization for about 50% less which also weighs less (taking less of an impact on my shoulder as I lug it in my camera bag all day) and the reviews of its image quality are stellar.  Before I run out and drop the $1K I shall have to test that version of the macro as well to see how it fares.

Thanks for reading, and if you’re looking to buy this lens, check out B&H, they normally have the best prices and always have the best service.

Our 2nd Anniversary – We Look Good.

November 14th, 2011:

As many of you know, Felicia and I love pictures.  We love making them and I love being in them (Felicia, not so much – she prefers being behind the camera).  Yet somehow, once a year I manage to convince my wife to head out and have our photographs taken.  I think she loves the idea of creating a historical record of our lives by having a session each anniversary.  Our wedding photography took place in Singapore, last year we had a shoot in Union Station in Los Angeles, and this year, for our second anniversary, we headed down to the San Juan Capistrano Mission.

Our friend and fellow wedding photographer, Ian Grant,  did a good job making us look good, and Felicia somehow managed to get me in a tux (I haven’t worn one since Jr. Prom)

We ran amok in the mission and wandered the streets of San Juan Capistrano for a while until Felicia started screaming bloody murder because her very-fancy-but-very-uncomfortable shoes Steve Madden Luxe stilettos were killing her feet. (edit by Felicia)

Thanks again Ian!

This is what I deal with on a daily basis…

Secluded Gardens with Sean + Amber

Last month Felicia and I headed out to Temecula to photograph Amber and Sean’s big day at the Secluded Garden Estates.  The weather was just right and the newly opened venue was a treasure trove of cool locations to shoot at – cactus, oak trees, views of the valley, this place had it all.

Sean and Amber had warned us numerous times that the party was going to get insane and we should be ready.  We arrived “ready“, and the beer and champagne flowed immediately and by the reception everyone was at least two cocktails in. The dance floor became a crush of people and I had to dance my way through just to grab pictures of the party (and any of you who have ever seen me dance, know that wasn’t pretty).

Vegetables?!?

October 31st, 2011:

Abundant, Harvest, Organics, Small, Box, Vegetables, Fruit, Photography

Happy Halloween everyone! Today I will blog about something REALLY scary… Vegetables.

During my last year of High School I was torn between going into college for two VERY lucrative professions. I either wanted to go to Le Cordon Bleu in San Francisco and learn how to cook, or I wanted to head off to get my B.A. in Theater and become the next Brando.  I choose theater school (which eventually led me to filmmaking, which brought me my passion for photography), but the kitchen was never far from my heart. So when Felicia and I recently learned about Abundant Harvest Organics and their weekly deliveries to Burbank of fresh fruits and veggies we got excited.   For just under $22 a week we get to go down to Warner Bros. studio every Tuesday morning and trade our empty box for a box of whatever is in season here in California, and it’s ALL ORGANIC.  After signing up, we received our first box last week.

Our haul for the week was a variety of 11 fruits and veggies (all harvested in the 24 hours prior to delivery), which filled our fridge and left us scrambling across the internets to find recipes for things like acorn squash and persimmons.  All said, radishes and squash aren’t something we would normally buy at the grocery store, but the adventure of finding ways to cook them and knowing who the farmers are that grew them is half the fun (they even include a newsletter with the farmers names, websites and email addresses so you can get in touch if you’d like!).  Today is Monday, and after a vegetable filled week, the only thing we have left is a pomegranate, the 3 persimmons (which still aren’t ripe), a little basil and the radishes which will be eaten tonight.

I am excited to see what I get tomorrow!

P.S. – They deliver all over California, so if you are interested check out their site!

A few weeks back we had Mr. O come from Singapore to stay with us in Burbank for 5 nights.  On the third evening, in that hazy window of time before midnight but after 3 or 4 vodka-cranberries, I decided to pull out my camera and flash and do some portraits.  I plopped Mr. O in a chair and popped off 20 or so images in about 3 minutes, these are a couple of my favorites which were immediately added to his Facebook before we hit that 5th vodka-cranberry and the haze of the evening continued.

Dana Point Wedding of Shawna + Matt

Last month was a busy one for Felicia and I – we shot weddings in Napa, Dana Point, Pasadena and Temecula, adding thousands of miles to our little Volkswagon.  Right smack in the middle of the month we made our way down to the Chart House in Dana Point to capture Shawna and Matt’s big day.  Most of the day had grey skies which provided a giant cloudy softbox in the sky, but late in the afternoon the sun decided to join us which let the out of town guests basked in the glory of our Californian sun.   Thanks to Shawna’s percision planning, everything ran perfect and the day went off without a hitch – except the getting hitched part, that is.

When the sun finally showed itself over Dana Point harbor and  I snapped off half a dozen pictures to composite into a panorama of the epic view.

Eileen + Trinidad at Highland Springs

October 21st, 2011:

Highland, Springs, Engagement, Session, Photography, Photographer, Los, Angeles, Chino, Hills, Wedding,

Eileen & Trinidad are friends of Cassandra & Javier, and I can see why: All 4 of these awesome people are super easy-going and fun to be around!

We started off our photo session at a sushi bar where Eileen & Trinidad first met. I love being able to shoot at a place of sentimental value for our clients, and even better yet when they’re on a first name basis with the owner so we get to take pictures before it’s open to other patrons!

After a run of the sushi bar – and after I had sufficiently manhandled Trinidad’s sushi roll for the shot above, I let them eat this roll – we headed east to Highland Springs Resort for the second half of their shoot.
